Houdini

Since the moment Gabrielle was swaddled and brought to us we began calling her Houdini, because even with the nurses wrapping her tightly she somehow always managed to get her arms out of the blanket. Then we started to put mitts on her hands (which we quickly changed to socks) to prevent her from scratching her face. Of course the moment we wrapped her in a blanket she had the mitts off again. The nickname quickly stuck and has been very appropriate since day one.

A few new moms advised me to invest in a Miracle Blanket. They told me it is a "miracle" how helpful the blanket is in calming an upset baby. Luckily I was given a Miracle Blanket as a baby shower gift. As soon as we got home from the hospital we began using the blanket. The Miracle Blanket basically ties each arm down with a piece of fabric, then place the baby's legs in a pocket, and finally wrap the blanket tightly around the baby. After demonstrating how the blanket works Michael informed me that Miracle Blanket is a euphemism for baby straight jacket. Once Gabby is swaddled in the blanket you hear her struggle and grunt trying to free her arms. Michael and I joked that she would officially become Houdini once she could free herself from the baby's version of a straight jacket. On April 13, 2010 my less than one month old baby girl mastered one of Houdini's greatest tricks... she freed herself (or at least an arm) from the baby straight jacket, without any of Houdini's tricks just pure determination. Today Gabby freed her legs from the pocket. Now if only she could combine the two efforts....Don't worry she has her daddy's persistence and will eventually free herself completely. I will continue to update you with Houdini's newest magic acts.

Sacrafices for My Angel

Everyone knows that being a parent is full of sacrifices and some are more difficult than others. So far being a Mom I have "sacrificed" my skin thanks to stretch marks, my youthfulness, thanks to the worries that cause the new wrinkles I notice weekly, my pretty legs thanks to the varicose veins I received during pregnancy that never went away, the comfort of sitting thanks to the back pain I have had ever since pregnancy, a good night’s sleep, and the list goes on... However, none of these things truly feel like a sacrifice (although I do miss sleep and my non-damaged body) they are just part of being a mommy and I wouldn't trade parenthood for anything! Today, however, a very difficult sacrifice was made, although I know it was the only choice. Ranger, the dog Michael and I had for 7 ½ years, was given to a new home today. He bit Gabby on her head when she was about 9 months old and then about a week ago he nipped at her and unfortunately that was the last straw. M...

Shelbie. Sherbie? Sheldon!

So I caved. We always go to the pet store and look at all of the animals, for at least an hour each week. The day after Christmas we went to the pet store and Gabby said, "Can I have a real cat? Please..." I said no, but for some reason I decided she needed a cat and Michael was on board, so Saturday we did not tell her what we were doing, but we bought all of the stuff for a cat and then went to the pet adoptions. Gabby loves looking at all of the pets and was petting all of the kitties. We played with numerous cats and chose a 9 month old cat that has been in the pet store as long as we have been going there.   This cat always seems to perk up and give Gabby attention, so he was the only one I was truly interested in adopting.  I didn't want a kitten because they are so rambunctious with sharp kitten claws, not to mention Gabby isn't that gentle and I was afraid she might have loved it to death.  We used Gabby's Christmas money from all of...

Halloween & Another Kitty Costume

Halloween this year was a whirlwind.  I had plans. Big plans, but life happens and plans change. Gabby had early release on Wednesday and Thursday this week.  We had every moment scheduled, but our schedule changed. We were blessed to have Grandma, Grandpa, and Aunt Sharon come for a surprise visit.  I wasn't getting much sleep and so I wasn't 100%. Wednesday Gabby spent the day with Mommy visiting with Aunt Sharon and Grandma and Grandpa once out of school. On Thursday, we still managed to spend one day with Aunt Sharon and even take her to the airport after Mommy got off of work.  Then we went to Uncle Mark's new apartment and picked up some clothes for him (Gabby is in LOVE and wants to move in immediately).  Then the fun began.  She got to  paint a black cat for Halloween and then got a Gigi's cupcake (eating nothing but the frosting).  Somehow she later convinced me to take her to the farmer's market for perusing, then some cartwheels in a...
